Dunn is a small town in northwestern North Carolina, United States. The population was 7,827 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg area. Dunn is located in Buncombe County and has a total land area of only 0.6 square miles (1 km²). The name "Dunn" comes from two early North Carolina settlers, Samuel Dunn and James Hogg, who named their farmstead after General John Custer's regiment which fought in the Indian Wars. The town was platted in 1857 by Edwin Swayne and others as an agricultural village on the north side of Great Smoky Mountains National Park; it became a city in 1907. In 1924, Dunn became one of six townships within Buncombe County to be eliminated when that county was merged with other counties to form new ones named Gaston, Henderson, McDowell, Rutherford and Union Counties. At first there were plans for the entire town to be disbanded but because so few people lived there and most things were used or stored away within the larger municipalities it wasn't until after World War II that anything substantial happened with Dunn again becoming an agricultural center with housing developments popping up around it like nowhere else on the goings-on around hereabouts...the last time I remember saw any live stock being raised anywhere near hereabouts was back during prohibition days when they had some chickens run around out back of one of those apartment buildings built back then way down by where now stands Masonic Temple—henceforth known as "Dunn Place". Today much infrastructure has been replaced over time such as asphalt roads (and also quite a bit of rebuilding/repaving following Hurricanes Floyd & Katrina) which makes getting around not only more difficult but also more costly given this level of investment since during prohibition days things just didn't get done like they should have otherwise due to lackadaisical attitudes about maintenance generally among our elected officials especially when compared to times now....There's still enough agriculture going on though even if most folks don't care about having access to all types of transportation these days including horses and cars so if you're looking for something specific outside your door or yard you're likely luckier than most since there's no reason not to try reaching out either through word-of-mouth or simply stopping by one day at least while driving through town if you want something specific

In 1819, it became the county seat of Chatham County and has remained so since. Dunn is located on the Yadkin River just south of its confluence with the Catawba River. The town is bordered to the east by Manteo Township and to the west by Dunn City. It lies within Upson-Chatham County School District #2A. According to the United States Census Bureau, Dunn has a total area of , all of it land. The Yadkin River forms much of Dunn's southeastern border and flows through most of its interior before joining near Greenville to form Lake Waccamaw about southeast of town. Interstate 236 passes through eastern edge of town as well as its northwestern corner which are both within Upson-Chatham County School District #2A bounds. As ofthe 2010 census, there were 7,868 people residing in Dunntown ZIP Code 28721: 6,527 households (or 85%) consisting of individuals and 1,023 families; 2,052 housing units (or 13%) made up of two or more individual apartments; and 309 businesses closed during last year's recession which had an impact on business closures rate for incorporated municipalities in NC - down from 396% in 2000 but still above rural rates (.9%). As mentioned earlier this week - 5% decline across NC over last year due primarily to recessionary effects (-3%), while 9% growth nationally (+1%) reflects increasing disposable income attributable to recent economic gains around world periphery (+4%).
Dunn was founded in 1785 by James Dunn, who named it for himself. The town became a resort town for the wealthy and powerful in the early 19th century. In 1853, Dunn's steamboat company built the first steamship to cross the Atlantic. The town grew rapidly during the late 19th century and soon had a population of over 10,000 people. However, by 1920, Dunn's economy had fallen apart and its population was only 690 people.
