Dunn is a small town in central North Carolina, located about thirty-five miles northwest of Raleigh. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. Dunn is one of the oldest settlements in North Carolina and has been inhabited by the Lenape people for over three hundred years. In 1727, General James Tryon founded what is now Dunn on land acquired from the Lenape. The first white person to live in Dunn was John White, who arrived in 1774. A year later, Captain David Wilkinson also settled in Dunn. By 1800, there were several families living in and around Dunn. The first post office was established in 1819. In 1837, General Edmund Kirby Smith built a sawmill and gristmill near the present day intersection of Ulysses Boulevard and West Broad Street. This mill continued to operate until it was destroyed by fire in 1865. In 1894, after more than one hundred years of growth and development within Dunn Township (later named McCain), residents voted to become their own village when they formed a charter government under the name Dunston Village Corporation. The first mayor and Town Council were elected that year with Wm Dyer as Mayor and Geo Hargrave as Town Councilman; however, this charter did not last very long because it was repealed six months later without an election being held due to lack of funds from incorporation sponsorships billed as “town meetings” which never took place according to town ordinances at that time! In 1907 local farmers organized themselves into a cooperative society known as The National Agricultural Company Limited which grew rapidly due to increased demand for goods produced by its members during World War I including munitions production at nearby Kinston Arsenal using local resources managed through collective bargaining with American Federation of Labor locals). At some point before 1945 commercial farming had ceased entirely within Dunston limits although there are scattered farmsteads scattered throughout unincorporated McCain including one still extant today called Old Mill Road/Dunstanton Rd which straddles both sides of I-95 northbound just outside Ofelia! Because most primary economic activity occurred outside town limits or within neighboring communities such as Kinston or Raleigh this often left little evidence remaining documenting tribal holdings or interactions between community members other than oral histories or physical remnants! It should be noted that despite these efforts much research remains undone given difficult access restrictions placed on many historically sensitive areas Consequently we can only guess about what may have happened during precontact times when land usage patterns were highly variable including much greater contact between indigenous peoples and Europeans
Dunn was founded in 1792 by General James Johnston, a Confederate general. The town grew rapidly after the North Carolina Railroad was built through it in 1825, and by 1830 it had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1857 the town became a part of Raleigh and attained its current size.
