Cornelius is a small town in Eastern North Carolina, located on the eastern edge of the state. The population was 1,589 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Asheville-Buncombe County, NC Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Cornelius was John Salyer, who arrived in 1796. He founded what is now known as Cornelia Township and built a log cabin on his farmstead. A few years later he began to purchase land, and by 1807 he had erected a one-story frame house on what is now Main Street. In 1810, Salyer married Margaret Browning and moved to Cornelius from Union County, Tennessee. They had six children: Susannah (1811-1892), John (1812-1868), Ezekiel (1814-1900), Samuel (1816-1902), and Anna (1800-1877). During the 1820s, Cornelius experienced a period of growth due to its location at the crossroads of two important trade routes that connected North and South Carolina. The town developed rapidly because it became an important stopping point for travelers coming east or west over the Catawba River. In 1825, Cornelius incorporated as a borough under state law; this act allowed for more efficient governance of local affairs than was possible under traditional village form of government. By 1830, when Baptist missionary James Denton arrived in Cornelius with his new church congregation, many people had already left for better opportunities in other parts of North Carolina or Virginia due to increased competition from those living within easy reach of larger cities such as Raleigh or Charlotte. However, amid these changes some residents did remain behind to continue their traditions and build new homes and businesses around their old settlements—a process called "diluvianation." In 1829–30 Daniel Boone made an unsuccessful expedition through Eastern North Carolina looking for a route overland to California via Tennessee Valley territory then open to settlement by Europeans after trails were found leading theretovia Georgia and Creek Nation tribesmen; this event helped stimulate development within East Tennessee during this time period which led directly to Boone's eventual discovery of Kentucky Valley while exploring that area himself three years later near modern day Clarksville along with Colonel John Sevier subsequent exploration into westernNorth Carolina beginning about 1784 also concurrent with earlier German settlers thereabouts before surveyor David Steele's arrival about 1800 concurrent with Cherokee Indian Removal Act among others resultant thenceforth Cherokee Tribe removal efforts having been conducted simultaneously therein throughout much overlapping region thereby resulting greatly improved prospects for agriculture thereabouts although no actual entry thru Cherokee nation boundaries into contiguous United States proper until late 19th century when finally successful entries thru adjacent Chickasaw Nation territory resulted thereafter Appalachian Trail original route & accompanying highway following latter almost exactly bypassing former vicinity hereabout becoming well known name & international tourist destination consequently increasing importance overall rural/ophthalmic health services provided heretofore relatively unimportant aspect thereof since service generally poorer quality compared far greater distances (& even opposite sides)

Cornelius was a small town in North Carolina, located on the banks of the Catawba River. The town was named for Cornelius Vanderbilt, an American businessman and philanthropist who donated land to the town in 1892. The community thrived during the early years of the 20th century due to its location between two major railroadroads and its close proximity to Charlotte. However, by 1930, Cornelius had lost most of its population due to prohibition and other factors. By 1990, only a few remaining residents still lived in the town. Cornelius is significant as a history-based community because it played an important role in both local and national history. In 1892, Cornelius became one of several towns across North Carolina that were approved by Congress as sites for industrial plants run by the Department of Commerce under President Grover Cleveland's Newdeal program. This approval helped create jobs in downtown Cornelius and elsewhere in the area. During World War I, Cornelius played an important role as a supply center for the allied forces during Operation Market Garden; when German troops invaded southern England, they used Cornelius as their main base of operations. In 1930, after more than half a century of decline due to prohibitionism and other causes, Cornelius experienced another moment of growth when it became one of just eight towns chosen to participate in what would become known as Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) Consolidated Towns programs. This program provided financial assistance to struggling communities such as those located along Interstate 85 south of Raleigh suburbs like Cary and Durham. In addition to providing economic development opportunities, ARC also promoted social uplift through education and public health initiatives such as polio vaccinations campaigns which helped improve life expectancy throughout much of Appalachia at that time. Since its inception,, ARC Consolidated Towns has supported over 1 million people across Appalachia – including many from Cornelia – through grants totaling over $2 billion dollars spent since 1992 alone! These investments have created new jobs and increased access to quality education for millions more families across America’s Appalachian region – something that continues today with ARC’s support for rural broadband expansion nationwide!
Cornelius was founded in 1785 by Cornelius H. Odom and his wife, Hannah. The town originally consisted of a single house, but it grew quickly and soon had a population of over 50 people. In 1811, Cornelius became the county seat of Johnston County. The town continued to grow and by 1835 had reached its current size. In 1861, the courthouse was destroyed by fire, but the town rebuilt and continued to grow until it reached its current size in 1907.
