Since then it has slowly declined, reaching 5,629 residents as of 2000. However, there are plans for revitalization which may bring about another increase in population to this smalltown community if successful. Cornelius is located just off Interstate 25 exit 372 on Hwy 191 north of Raleigh City Limits and east of I-85/I-336 junction near US Highway 301 south of High Point Airport

During World War II, Cornelius made large contributions to the war effort with its production of B-29s for United States bomber pilots airlifting troops and supplies over Japan. Cornelius was founded in 1794 by James Cornelius and his wife, Rebecca. It was a small town at the time, with only twenty-five residents. The following year, Cornelius became the county seat of Catawba County. By 1800, the population had grown to over one thousand people. The town received its first post office in 1801. In 1825, Cornelius became the county seat of Catawba County again. During this time, it also became an important center for trade and commerce. In 1868, Cornelius changed its name to Statesville and lost its importance as a commercial center after the construction of Interstate 85 nearby eliminated most of its trade partners. However, Statesville continued to be home to many local businesses until it closed in the 1970s.
