Cornelius is a town in Randolph County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,746 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. Cornelius was founded by Cornelius and Sarah Jennings in 1824. Cornelius is located in eastern Randolph County on the Yadkin River. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , all of it land. The Yadkin River forms most of the town's eastern border and its western boundary is a long series of ridges that run parallel to each other for about . These ridges are used for agricultural purposes and provide natural boundaries between cornfields on one side and rural areas on the other. According to legend, Cornelius was named after General James Wolfe who defeated British forces at Battle of Quebec in 1759. General Wolfe's family owned a large tract of land near Cornelius which helped make him an influential man in Randolph County during his lifetime. As early as 1824, some settlers were looking for ways to get into what would become Cornelius from Raleigh or Durham because those cities were much larger than they were then. In 1827, when Randolph County became organized under North Carolina law, John Healey offered to donate two acres (0.8 km²) east of downtown to be used as a county seat; however, no action was taken until 1830 when Jnoathan Gwynn donated another two acres (0.8 km²). In 1835-36 carpenter Ainsworth Addison built a house near where Main Street now stands on what later became known as Addison Street (now Pope Street). This house still stands today and is called Gwynn House; it served as both county courthouse and jail from 1830 until 1893 when it was replaced by the current courthouse building which dates back to 1915-16 In 1840-41 Drury Crain built his home just north of present day US Highway 321 on what would later become known as Crain Road (now Elmendorf Road). This home still stands today with its original porch and front door open still intact although greatly deteriorated due to weathering; it has beenlisted by Historic American Buildings Survey as being "culturally significant". Addison Streetscape designation went out over concerns that some windows had been boarded up but restoration work began in 2009 after pressure from residents reopened many windows === By 1850 there were twenty families living here with seventy five slaves === By 1860 there were 369 residents with 309 slaves === When Johnston moved into government office he ordered all white male citizens aged 25 years or older must enroll within three months=== On July 11th 1861 Confederate States Army occupied Cornelius while troops marched through town{{#invoke:fn2|date=1861}} }}

Cornelius was a town in Orange County, North Carolina from 1800 until the early 1840s. It was one of the first towns in the area and its original location is still remembered. The town was founded by Cornelius Tryon, Sr. on a tract of land that he donated to the government in 1796. The Tryons were pioneers in this part of Orange County and their home is still preserved as a museum today. The town’s name comes from Cornelius Tryon, Sr., who donated what is now known as Tryontown to the government in 1796. At first it was called simply “Tryon” but after some time it became known as “Cornelius” because many people lived here back then. The original courthouse was built here in 1807 and it remains one of the most important buildings in Cornelius today. In 1809, Cornelius had an addition made to its jail which served as a prison for criminals until 1840 when it closed down due to lack of space. After independence from England, many colonists began moving into this area and soon there were several towns located near Cornelius including Rocky Mount (1819), Weaverville (1824), Fayetteville (1828) and Carrboro (1830). By 1830, most of what is now Orange County had been organized with Cornelius being at its center. However, despite having all these other towns nearby, little development took place within them until after World War II when newcomers started moving into this area again and new businesses started popping up hereabouts. Today, much of what used to be downtown Cornelius has been redeveloped into office complexes and other commercial areas while some remaining parts are still used for residential purposes like the Tryon Mansion which overlooks downtown on participating streets only accessible through an underground entrance dating back to 1870!
Cornelius was founded in 1785 by Cornelius Hance and his wife Hannah. The town was named after General James Cornwallis, who fought with the British in the American Revolution. In 1847, Cornelius had a population of 350 people. The town experienced growth after it became the county seat of Caldwell County in 1851. It grew even more when Caldwell County was created from parts of Johnston and Union counties in 1865. The population reached 1,500 by 1870 and 3,000 by 1900. The population decreased to 1,100 by 1930 but has since increased again to about 2,000 today.
