The proprietor, Mr. Hargrave, saw him and asked what he wanted. Sikes explained that he needed some ear plugs so that he could avoid getting involved in any further fighting in South Carolina. Mr. Hargrave told him that he had plenty of them but they would only be available for a few days because they were being granted out as military equipment to troops stationed in North Carolina during the war! Sikes took advantage of this offer and bought several sets of ear plugs before departing for South Carolina. Once Sikes arrived in North Carolina, he set up shop at his cousin's house where he began manufacturing his own sets of shooting ear plugs with his own techniques and materials. Over time, Sikes became known as the "Father of Shooting Ear Plugs." In 1801, Captain Cornelius helped found what would become Raleigh when he donated land to be used as a city limits. He also established Chapel Hill Academy (later University of North Carolina) here on his property; this school remains one of America's preeminent universities today. After captain Harnett's death in 1840,his widow continued to live at their estate until her death in 1865; thereafter it passed through various families before being acquired by UNC Chapel Hill graduate John Broughton Trier who kept it open as an undergraduate hall from 1892-1912. Finally, it reverted back to UNC Chapel Hill after World War I when it became part of Duke University; since 1920 it has been known as The Tyndall Center for Climate Change Research & Education at Duke University School of Law). The Cornelius family migrated to North Carolina in the early 1800s. The Cornelius brothers, John and Joseph, founded a farming community on the Hiwassee River in 1802. The community grew rapidly, and by 1810 it had a store, school, and Masonic lodge. In 1812 John Cornelius married Elizabeth Canby, daughter of Colonel Samuel Canby of Rutherford County. They settled on a farm northeast of Raleigh near present-day Chapel Hill. By 1830 the Cornelius family had outgrown their original landholdings and bought adjacent land from Elias Boudinot for $3 per acre. The new land became known as "Cornelius Heights." In 1840 John Cornelius built an impressive home on what is now called "Cornelius Drive." He died in 1849, leaving his estate to his wife Elizabeth and four sons: George Washington (1819-1890), James Knox (1825-1890), William Tryon (1829-1913) and John Randolph (1837-1920).
