Cornelius is a town in Johnston County, North Carolina. The population was 8,822 at the 2000 census. It lies on the Yadkin River and is part of the Greensboro-Winston-Salem Combined Statistical Area. The first white person to live in Cornelius was James Crouse who arrived in 1784. Cornelius got its name from General John Cornelius who fought in the American Revolution as a colonel under Nathanael Greene. The present day Cornelius community was founded by two farmers, Hiram Smith and David Cook in 1814. They named their community after General John Crouse and his wife Elizabeth (Betsy) Cook because they believed that she would provide them with support during the war. At that time, all farmers were required to have a home or place of business within one mile (1 km) of their farmsteads so that they could attend to their crops and animals. In 1819, Captain Abel Bowen purchased land east of Cornelius from David Cook for $3 per acre (0·94 km²). He built a log cabin known as Bowens Cabin which he occupied until his death in 1868. In 1824, Captain Bowen's son John bought some additional land east of Cornelius from Abel Bowen Jr.. This area became known as North Fork Township when it was organized by ordinance on December 28, 1830. Because corn wasn't grown until after 1800 and there wasn't much trade between Johnston County and other parts of South Carolina or North Carolina until after 1800, most people living near cornfields did so because it provided food for their livestock instead of money earned through trade or agriculture products such as tobacco or rice. Cornelius was a small town in the state of North Carolina when it was founded on December 12, 1819. It is located about 25 miles south of Hendersonville and is about 20 miles southwest of Chapel Hill. Cornelius was initially known as Fort Cornelius and had a garrison of 10 soldiers. The first settler in Cornelius was James Swain, who arrived in 1820. He built a cabin on the edge of what is now downtown Cornelius. In 1825, John Ashe established a courthouse here and began to build up the town around it. By 1830, there were over 100 people living in Cornelius. The town prospered because it became an important transportation center for goods arriving from nearby plantations and farms outside the city limits. In 1840, local merchant John Matson developed land north of town and constructed a mill which provided mills with flour, milk, butter, eggs, and other products for local residents. This development led to increased trade throughout the township; by 1850, corn commerce accounted for 50% of all domestic economic activity in Cornelius In 1861-1862 plantation owners throughout southern North Carolina revolted against slavery under the leadership of General Robert Ewell Johnston Jr., commonly known as "the Angelic Warrior." Many slaveholders fled to northern states or Canada during this time period due to violence and upheaval across the South (known as the American Civil War). Anticipating possible emancipation policies following Johnston's victory over Confederate forces at Appomattox Court House Virginia on April 9th 1865 (), many white farmers decided to move out of major cotton-producing areas into rural areas such as southern North Carolina where they could continue producing crops while their slaves remained behind bondage
