Cornelius died at the age of eighty-six on October 25, 1865, in Raleigh, North Carolina. He is buried at Mt. Zion Cemetery in Raleigh. His name has been immortalized by two major U.S. highways: Interstate 85 in Durham and State Route 601 (Cumberland Street) near Chapel Hill.

The community was located on the south side of Elizabeth River, about six miles north-northwest of Raleigh. Cornelius was founded by Norwegian immigrants in 1798.
