In 1851, the County of Craven merged with Durham County to form new Johnston County. When Johnston County was divided into two parts— Forsyth County to the east and Buncombe County to the west—Cornelius came under Buncombe County jurisdiction. In 1861, when Forsyth County too merged with Durham County to form new Dare COUNTY, Cornelius escaped annexation into Dare COUNTY because he felt that it would have been an injustice to others who had made similar sacrifices for their county during the Civil War era. When Johnston COUNTY was reorganized as Wake Counties within New Hanover State in 1907, all of its residents were automatically transferred from Buncombe County to Wake Counties without any choice or notification; this caused some controversy because there were many people living in both counties who did not move until after 1907 . The current incarnation of Enderlin Avenue running through downtown Cornelius began as a dirt road connecting what are now horse stalls on one side of Enderlin Ave., where general storekeepers used to set up shop during prohibition days before 1920s counterparts moved out closer to stores nearer Interstate 95; today’sentertainment district begins near current intersection of Enderlin Ave./I-95/ exit 13A just south of Main Street which has become more commercialized over time primarily due To increased traffic volume along I-95 corridor adjacent thereto.; three blocks east along main street between I-95/exit 13A & Enderlin Ave., Wedgwood Coffee & Tea store opened ; First Baptist Church established 1870 by Reverend John Broughton
