Cornelius is a town in Gaston County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,853 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greensboro–High Point Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1840, Cornelius had a school built and it continued to operate until 1930. In 1865, Confederate General Robert Ewell ordered all businesses closed during the Battle of Gettysburg because "the people here are Union sympathizers." One shop owner decided to stay open and sell munitions to help supply Confederate forces fighting on behalf of the Confederacy. In 1920, when Gaston County was created from portions of Johnston County, Cornelius became one of its first towns. When the county consolidated with Rowan County in 1926, Cornelius became part of that new county as well. According to the 2000 census there were 2,521 people living in Cornelius (1% more than 2000). The racial makeup of Cornelius was 97% white; 1% black or African American; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; and 1% other race/ethnicity

The town grew quickly and soon had a population of over 100 people. In 1854, the Cornelius brothers sold the town to J.D. Gaines for $10,000. gaines renamed the town Charlotte and it remained that way until 1921 when it changed its name again to Cornelius following a referendum vote by the citizens. The first post office opened in Cornelius on October 1, 1892. The last mail service stopped operations in 1951. Cornelius is home to North Carolina State University which was founded in 1909 and is one of the oldest universities in North Carolina. NC State also has several other colleges including UNC Asheville (1931), Davidson College (1896), Duke University (1921) and Wake Forest University (1986).
