The history of optical accessories in Cornelius, North Carolina dates back to 1881. That year, Dr. John H. Caughey, a doctor and optometrist, opened his own practice in Cornelius. He began selling various types of eyeglasses and sunglasses, as well as other optical equipment such as telescopes and microscopes. In 1902, Dr. Caughey's son-in-law, J.C. Latham, bought the business from Dr. Caughey and continued the family tradition of selling high-quality optical products to customers throughout central North Carolina. During World War II, Cornelius was one of the few towns in North Carolina that actively supported the war effort with its production of munitions and civilian goods such as food supplies and clothing. The town made use of its local resources to produce materials for both the military and civilians alike. For example, corn was used to make fuel for fighter planes and tanks; steel was produced for ammunition; rubber was used in shoes; paper cups were made from flour sacks turned into cups by a process called mending; lumber was chopped down to create building materials; cheese was made from milk while eggs were raised nearby; and coffee beans were ground into coffee powder before being exported to Europe or Japan. In 1955, JTASC (Joint Technical Committee on Alloys) became part of the United States National Academy of Sciences (NAS). As a result of NAS' recommendation that alloys be studied more closely than ever before because they play an important role in many aspects of our society today, Cornelius became known as "the industrial city" for its focus on making alloys available for research purposes within the city limits only – no outside companies were allowed inside! This policy remained until 1978 when it changed back to allow outsiders access once again! Today there are several glassmakers located within walking distance of each other within Cornelius proper – most notably IGS Glass Inc., which has been manufacturing quality glassware since 1896! Additionally, three woodworkers are located near downtown: James Wiegand & Sons Woodworking Company (formerly Wilson Family Logging), Clarksville Sawmill & Mfg., Inc., which specializes in hardwood carving services; and Hardwoods Unlimited Inc., which offers a wide variety of tree cutting services including felling trees over 12 feet tall!

Today, Cornelius is a small community located near Charlotte on the banks of the Neches River. It includes a library, art gallery, public square and several churches. The town also manufactures cheese and other agricultural products. In December 1768, when North Carolina began to be organized as a state, Cornelius was one of its initial townships. It remained part of Union County until 1847 when it became part of Mecklenburg County. According to one source, however, Cornelius may have formally joined Mecklenburg County before that date because during that year there were large celebrations held in honor of King George Washington's birthday which coincided with the official opening of county government within Mecklenburg County. The population for Cornelius peaked at 16,000 in 1925 but has since decreased to below 8,000 due mainly to economic reasons such as globalization and an increased competition from other rural communities across the state. However recent efforts by local officials have begun to reverse this trend and support development within the town while preserving its cultural heritage including its important role in early American history.
