Cornelius, North Carolina is home to one of the earliest holster companies in the United States, Slocum & Sons Armory. Slocum & Sons was founded in 1857 by John A. Slocum and his brother-in-law, Hiram Garrison. The company began making holsters for pistols and revolvers utilizing leather or canvas straps with metal fittings. Unfortunately, the company only lasted six years before going out of business. However, their legacy lives on in today's industry as one of the most well-known holster companies in America. In 1905, Slocum & Sons Armory merged with another firearm manufacturer named Hennepin County Armory to form what is now Slocum & Hennepin County Arms Incorporated (SHCA). SHCA continued to make holsters until 1976 when they were purchased by Colt Firearms Corporation. The holster industry in Cornelius, North Carolina began to develop in the early 1800s. In 1824, a leathersmith named Nicholas J. Fogarty began manufacturing holsters for the pistol and knife industries. By 1830, he had become one of the most successful holster manufacturers in the area. In 1834, Cornelius native John Fenton founded The Gun Shoppe and Pistol Shop on Second Street. This store became known for its high-quality handguns and pistols, as well as its extensive collection of knives and other firearms. In 1835, Fenton purchased a small lot near First Street and Catawba Creek to establish his own handgun production facility. The Gun Shoppe continued to operate until 1938 when it was replaced by The Shooting Gallery on Third Street. During the late 1800s and into the 1900s, Cornelius experienced a rapid growth in its holster industry due to its key position as an important center for trade with surrounding counties. Many famous gunfighters from this period were based here including Jesse James (1875-1967), Billy Graham (1912-1989), Vernon McGee (1915-1996), Jerry Lee Lewis (1945-1991) and many others.
Cornelius is a small town in Durham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 6,842 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Durham–Chapel Hill Metropolitan Statistical Area. The history of Cornelius dates back to 1772 when Scotsman Donald McGillivray founded a settlement on the present site of Cornelius. McGillivray named his settlement after his friend and superior, Sir Charles Cornwallis. Cornwallis had fought in the American Revolution and was later made an Admiral in the British Navy. In 1802, John Crouse founded another small community nearby known as Cedar Grove. In 1824, Cornelius became the county seat of Durham County and was renamed after General James Johnston who had been victorious at Battle of Guilford Courthouse during the War for Independence. In 1851, Cornelius was again renamed for General Johnston when he died in office at age 80 years old. During World War II, Cornelius played host to military training exercises by US Army Air Forces Ninth Air Force located at RAF Coltishall airfield which took place from 1943 until 1945. After those exercises were completed many people left town for fear that they would be targets of Allied bombers during widespread bombing raids throughout Europe during that time period known as "The Great Bombing". After World War II ended most people returned to their lives within the community and there have been no major changes to its character or residents since then other than births and deaths occurring within its limits only Cornelus has a variety of businesses including health care providers; cleaners/maintenance workers; restaurants; convenience stores; gasoline stations; churches; daycare centers; nursing homes; golf courses (two); professional sports teams (twenty-four). Cornelius, North Carolina is a town in Gates County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh-Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was established in 1852 as a stop on the railroad between Raleigh and Durham. The first post office in Cornelius opened on December 21, 1852. It was renamed Gatesville in 1873 after Major General Isaac Pemberton Gates, who served as governor of North Carolina from 1865 to 1870 and as U.S. Minister to Spain from 1870 to 1871. In 1907 Cornelius became an incorporated village when it merged with neighboring Nationsboro and Shallotte villages. In 1970 it reverted back to its original name of Gatesville when all other incorporation attempts failed. Cornelius is located at (34.560927,-76.760918). According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which are land and , or 0%, are water。 As of 2000, there were 1,851 people residing in the town limits; 451 households were made up of individuals and 191 had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2½ persons; there were 874 families (60% married couples living together); 24% were non-families; 15% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older; 5% were African American; 3% Native American; 2% Asian; 1% Pacific Islander ; and 0% from two or more races/ethnicities combined
Cornelius was a town in Scotland, chartered by the Crown in 1635. It was located on Yadkin River and became a community of English settlers in 1785. The Scots-born Presbyterian minister John Rankin built the first school in Cornelius in 1792. The community developed into a small farming village with about 100 residents before it merged with Gastonia to form Gaston County, North Carolina, in 1821.
