Many aspects of life in Cornelius were influenced by Vanderbilt's investment decisions during this time period including music education at UNC Chapel Hill; architecture; engineering; banking; health care;and mores associated with southern white male society at that time. For example, many roads leading into the town were named after either Vanderbilts or other prominent figures from their industry/worldview at that time such as Railroad President James Buchanan Johnston who helped finance much of Raleigh's growth during this time period.
