This period saw significant economic development intown because new industries began to emerge such as lumbering and textile production. By 1830, Cornelius had regained some of its former prominence as an agricultural center due to its good access to irrigation systems and fertile lands. During the late 19th century, however, corn prices fell sharply which led some farmers to abandon their crops altogether in order to find other sources of income. In addition, improvements made to roads and transportation during this time caused more people than ever before to move into town for work opportunities or education opportunities. As a result, by 1920 only about fifty people lived in Cornelius while it experienced rapid decline overall due largely to demographic changes (i.e., increasing numbers of immigrants). Today little remains original from those days except for memories shared by those who lived through it: cornfeasts on Saturday nights; religious services at various churches; visiting family members who still resided there; hearing Genealogy Society stories about back when things were “normal”...

Today, Cornelius is home to more than 20 stores and restaurants along with two high school districts which help support its economy.
