Gunslingers, also called "gunners," were people who used firearms to shoot at game or birds. Slingshots date back to at least the 16th century, and early muzzleloaders could reach velocities of up to 100 miles per hour (160 kilometers per hour). By 1800, however, muzzleloader slings had largely replaced gun slings in use by North Carolina riflemen. Gunners continued to use them into the late 19th century; however, their popularity decreased as rifles became more advanced. In the 1970s and 1980s, gunners began using bows and crossbows instead of firearms for hunting purposes.

Cornelius is a small town in Randolph County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 3,024 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-Spartanburg-Pee Dee Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded by Cornelius Indians in 1868 as part of a move to found new towns in what was then Johnston County. The town name comes from a local swampy area near the original site of the community. In 1870, Cornelius had just under 1,000 residents and was incorporated as a village. In 1896, it became an incorporated town with a population of 6,000 people. One of Cornelius' first businesses was a grocery store which still operates today as First National Grocery Inc.. The store also served as the basis for what is now known as First National University's School of Business Administration & Entrepreneurship; it opened its doors in 1974 and remains one of UNC's largest educational facilities. In addition to its retail offerings, Cornelius has several parks and playgrounds which are popular with locals and visitors alike. One such park is called "The Park" and features an outdoor pool, tennis courts (with practice areas for both children and adults), baseball diamond/batting cages/fences/parking lot combination (for use by school groups), play areas for children aged 4–12 years old (including two large ponds that can be used for fishing), basketball court(s), amphitheater (which often hosts performances by local bands) and nine restaurants - five chain restaurants including Subway sandwich shops on Main Street and four independents: Jiffy Lube on I-40 exit 193A; Golden Donuts on US 421 exit 194A; Bennie's Barbecue on US 421 exit 197A; Moe's Southwest Grill on SR 527 southbound exit 184B; Chipotle Mexican Grill at I-240 eastbound Exit 190C). There are also three businesses that serve only food: Airstream Rentals located off US 421 exit 194B serving primarily camping supplies such as air mattresses and tents; GameStop off SR 527 southboundexit 184B serving primarily video games but also some items related to outdoors activities such as fishing poles, hunting optics etc.; and Comet Pizza located within walking distance from most homes along SR 527 northbound exit 184B serving traditional pizza dishes like garlic knots or Margaritas made with housemade margarita mix instead of hard alcohol.
