Gun sights have been a part of American society for over two centuries. The first known sighting devices were rudimentary sights used by soldiers in the Revolutionary War to help them aim their firearms. By the end of the 18th century, however, gun sights had evolved into modern design. During the antebellum period, guns were primarily used as tools of warfare and not as potential sources of entertainment or target shooting. So, there was little development in terms of sight technology. However, during this time period there was significant innovation in rifle sights and other firearm accessories. One such inventor was Cornelius Brownell who developed a system called "The Brownells Sight". This device allowed shooters to quickly adjust focus on their targets with ease by using an adjustable elevation knob located on top of the rifle stock. In 1892, George Goodman invented what is now known as a red-dot sight which became popular due its ability to fire projectiles at short distances without having to line up each shot perfectly every time. In 1886 an act was passed by the General Assembly providing for township organization and for its inhabitants to bear arms for protection against Indians One Hundred thirty acres (120 ha) of land were donated by Captain James Fenton to be used as the site of what is now known as Fenton Park - a botanical garden that has been open to the public since 1893 The town site became available once again when property lines were redrawn during local government consolidation in 1997 In 1898 Orville Hatch developed a small oil well near what is now known as Hatch Lake off US Highway 421 near milepost 9 on I-24/US Highway 277 – this well later became one of America's largest natural gas discoveries . The Cornelius family moved to North Carolina in the early 1800s. The Cornelius brothers, Daniel and John, were both born in 1792 in what is now Cumberland County, North Carolina. Daniel Cornelius was a lawyer and judge who served on the Cumberland County court for many years. John Cornelius was a farmer and later became a prosperous miller. In 1814, Daniel Cornelius married Sarah Pemberton and they had four children: Sarah (1815-1898), Benjamin (1817-1869), Edwin (1819-1900) and Josephine (1822-1907). Sarah Pemberton was of English descent and came from an old slaveholding family that lived on a plantation near Fayetteville. She studied at Wofford College in Spartanburg before becoming a teacher in 1824. When her husband died in 1828, she took over his teaching duties at Wofford College. After their son Benjamin’s death in 1869, she traveled to Europe to visit her friends before taking up another career as a teacher back home in North Carolina. Edwin Cornelius became an important figure at Coca Cola Company during the 20th century. He helped develop the business into what it is today and has been involved with its management ever since he joined forces with his father Benjamin Cornelius Sr., one of Coca Cola’s cofounders, in 1906. JosephineCornelious also played an important role at Coca Cola Company, serving as president and chief executive officer multiple times during her career there.
