He named his new settlement after himself, Cornelis (meaning " inland"), because he wanted people to know it existed and not just see it from afar. By 1800, there were over 100 settlers living in what is now Cornelius when Captain John's son Captcy George Washington moved with his family to become governor of Caroline County in 1801. In 1819, General Andrew Johnson traveled through central North Carolina on his way to Virginia and passed through Cartersville where he stopped at Fort Davidson on the Yadkin River for dinner with Governor James Kenedy before continuing on to Greensboro. When General Johnston reached Raleigh two days later he sent a courier ahead to say that he would be stopping at Fort Davidson for lunch that day before continuing on towards Durham; this event is generally considered to be when Raleigh began its transition from an agricultural center into an urban center under Johnston's leadership. Between 1825 and 1830 many businesses were built along both sides of Fayetteville Street between Second Street south and Third Street east - this area now includes most of downtown Cornelius - including one especially notable business which was called "The Landmark."
