's favorite son Cornelius was born in North Carolina on October 5, 1892. He was the grandson of John Cornelius and Rebecca Norris. Cornelius attended public schools in his home state until he was fifteen years old, when he went to college at NC State University. After earning a degree in business administration, Cornelius entered the military service as an artillery officer in World War I. He served with distinction and received the Croix de Guerre award for his actions during the war. In 1922, Cornelius married Thelma Gentry and they raised three children: daughter Cynthia (1924-2006), son Donald (1927-2002) and son John (1930-2010). After World War II ended, Cornelius returned to NC State where he became an associate professor of business administration. In 1953, he was elected president of the university and held that position until 1965. During his presidency, NC State achieved national notoriety for its successful programs in marketing and management research. In 1978 Cornelious retired fromNC State but continued to give generously to the university's students and staff through foundation grants and endowed chairships. Cornelious also made a significant impact on American education by creating or donating many prestigious educational institutions including UNC Asheville (later renamed North Carolina Central University), Duke University Divinity School, Wake Forest University School of Law, Elon College of Technology, Appalachian Regional Commission headquarters in Greeneville, Tennessee*, The Citadel*( later named Southern Command Missile Wing) *and Daniel Boone High School *in Moore County*, all located within 100 miles of Raleigh/Durham metro area*. His generosity has helped countless individuals achieve their dreams while making a positive impact on local communities.

Others left Cornelius to find new opportunities elsewhere within North Carolina or outside of United States borders. In 1886, Cornelius residents voted to change its name to honor Colonel James Bogue, who had fought for independence against British rule during the Revolutionary War and later served as Governor of North Carolina. Colonel Bogue is most well-known for his role in leading Confederate forces into battle at Missionary Ridge near Durhamtown during Operation Overlord, which ended what turned out to be one of history's largest defeats for the Confederacy
Cornelius was founded by Cornelius Vanderbilt in 1819 as a small town on the western edge of Charlotte, North Carolina. The town grew rapidly and by 1830 it had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1836, Cornelius became part of the newly formed Charlotte-Mecklenburg County and it remained an agricultural center until after World War II.
