The history of firearms in Cornelius, North Carolina dates back to at least 1868. The first handguns in the area were made of wood and musket balls. By 1889, however, Cornelius had its own arsenal and pistols were being made with brass and iron parts. By 1915, there were also machine guns in the arsenal. In that year, Cornelius became an independent city and began to import arms from other states. Firearms production continued until the late 1960s when most of the guns in circulation were replaced by more modern models.
