There they met another brother named James Atherton and together they formed the nucleus of what would become one of America's great families: The Athertons had five children – three sons (John S., William P.,and James W.), one daughter (Mary), and six grandchildren (George Washington Vanderbilt IV, Christina Hendricks Davenport Vanderbilt Wright Hite Vanderbilt II, Alice Evelyn Vanderbilt Shriver Pittman Pittman III).Cornelious was an accomplished legislator; he served as a state representative from 1849-1853 and as speaker of the house from 1865-1867; during this time he helped create the State Constitution which provided for equal rights for black citizens statewide.He also became involved with politics within his own home state; in 1862 he ran for lieutenant governor against incumbent Ralph Bunche but lost by just over 2,000 votes out of more than 6 million cast.Cornelius' political career ended after Reconstruction when North Carolina seceded from the United States following its victory at Appomattox Court House in 1865. Cornelius briefly resumed legal activity before eventually retiring to live on his estate near Randolph County where he died in 1889 aged 80 years old.
