In 1925, Cornelius became part of the new city of Greensboro, which made it much easier for its residents to get around. However, despite this progressivism, Cornelius experienced some quality-of-life problems throughout its history. For example, during the 1930s many of its citizens were displaced by World War II; as a result, many businesses closed down and living standards declined. However, overall Cornelius has fared well since moving into more recent times. Its demographics have shifted so that most of its current residents are white collar professionals or blue-collar workers; however there is still some Hispanic/Latino presence present in the community as well. Additionally, there are several cultural attractions within easy reach of Cornelius such as art galleries and theaters (most notably PNC Park), making it an interesting place to live and visit even if your primary focus is economic development or world culture instead of local history!
Cornelius was founded in 1775 by Cornelius Harnett. It became a town in 1810 and a city in 1853. The population of Cornelius peaked at 397 in 1880, but has since decreased to about 240 people.
