Cornelius, North Carolina is a small town located in the valley of the Catawba River. The population was 1,582 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg County, North Carolina Metropolitan Statistical Area. The community was founded in 1832 by Cornelius and his wife Anna Maria Smith. They named it after their father-in-law, General John Smith (1757-1835). The area now known as Cornelius was first settled by Scots-Irish farmers who worked the surrounding hills for farming and logging. In 1868, two brothers named Waddy and John McGee built a log cabin on what is now McGee Road. By 1870, there were ten families living in Cornelius proper and twelve scattered around its boundaries. The town growth accelerated during Reconstruction period from 1881 to 1921 due to heavy investment by local businessmen into transportation and industry opportunities within commuting distance of Cornelius via railroads and highways (including both U.S. Route 421 which ran through town center) – including coal mines that were established along Lovejoy Creek Valley just east of town limits; textile mills near Interstate 85 exit 17 on US 421; cattle ranches; timber plantations; gas stations/miners’ camps; machine shops/steel mills etc.). As early as 1895, when Cornelius had a post office with one name only (Natchez), other towns in Mecklenburg County began receiving mail with more than one name because most residents concentrated in one place during election time! A school was built in 1903 on present day McGee Road for students from neighboring communities who could not attend school near their homes due to lack of space or money. A fire destroyed an entire building housing the school’s library & archives on December 3rd 1907 which closed down all local educational resources for almost fifty years until it reopened as Gateway Library System under new management adjacent to Gateway Elementary School following Hurricane Floyd disaster October 20th 2017! In 1922, prohibition laws were repealed resulting in increased traffic congestion around downtown Cornelius so boosters started promoting self governance forms such as Model United Nations Club (MUNC). On May 14th 1924 MUNC adopted Constitution Of NC & Local SelfGovernment Plan became effective thereby creating new form of government for citizens called “Councilmen At Large” governed democratically by qualified Citizen Body elected at large instead of village headman style government having final say over all aspects without supervisory body like today! Cornelia has been Municipal Borough since 1934 while still maintaining Councilman At Large form of government although residents elect 5 Councillors direct from individual dwellings rather than exclusively through online voting system like today!

Vanderbilt quickly built up the town into a major center of commerce and industry. His businesses included a steamboat company, a cotton gin, and two textile mills. He also donated land to build the first public school in North Carolina. The school opened in 1825 and became one of the most important educational institutions in Crisp County until it closed its doors in 1970. Cornelius also played an important role in American history. In 1865, General Ulysses S Grant visited the town for part of his campaign against Confederate General Robert Ewell. During Grant's visit, he called on Commodore John Farragut to help him win the battle at Fort Fisher which helped end Reconstruction in America. Afterward, many residents moved to New York City or other cities during the Great Depression because they could not find work elsewhere."
