The weapon used a percussion cap to fire balls from a small magazine. It was designed as an anti- cavalry arm, and it proved successful against Native American resistance during the 1820s and 1830s. In 1836, governor James Kenedy authorized the importation of 10,000 rounds of “ buckshot” ammunition from Europe to use in North Carolina rifles. This new type of ammunition was much more effective than old ball shot and could be fired with ease through the tight spaces of rural plantations. By 1840, there were over 100 rifle manufacturers in North Carolina, employing many hand gunners as well as muzzleloaders and revolvers. By 1861, bullets had become an important aspect of military conflict throughout America due to their ability to penetrate armor and inflict serious damage on enemy troops while still remaining effective at close range. Cornelius was founded in 1837 by George Hogg and his brother James Hogg. The name comes from the Dutch word "koninklijke" (royal), meaning "kingdom." The first post office was established in 1838. In 1860, Cornelius participated in the American Civil War as a Confederate sympathizer. After the war, many of its residents joined Union forces and prospered during Reconstruction. The community experienced economic growth during the late 20th century due to its proximity to Charlotte and its international airport. However, recent recession has had a significant impact on local businesses and have forced many people out of their homes. Today, Cornelius remains an agricultural center with large plantations that produce cotton, rice, corn, tobacco, soybeans, and other crops; it also retains some historic buildings such as churches and schools which are popular tourist attractions for locals and visitors alike.

Cornelius was founded in 1795 by John Cornelius and his wife, Susannah. The town was named for the Cornelii family, who had settled there many years earlier. John Cornelius ran a small store and tavern in the community until he died in 1810. His widow continued to run the business until her death in 1827. The town grew rapidly during its early years, with Christopher Pritchard serving as mayor from 1828 to 1830. By 1840, however, corn production had declined and the population shrunk to around 80 people. The town experienced a resurgence during Reconstruction period when it became an important center for cotton production. In 1865, Cornelius was incorporated as a city under the name of Raleigh. However, it reverted back to its original name after several decades of neglect. In 1939, the city reincorporated as Cornelius again with a population of around 100 people. Today, Cornelius is home to a number of small businesses and restaurants along with several cultural attractions including an art museum and performing arts center. The community also enjoys significant tourist traffic due to its location within easy access of both Raleigh and Durham metropolitan areas.
