The first Europeans to visit what is now Concord were traders and missionaries who followed Spanish explorer Hernando de Soto in 1539-41. In 1627 Englishman William Penn founded Pennsylvania's second capital Philadelphia in what is now Bethlehem Township. On January 17, 1795, General John Forbes attacked Fort Nashborough near Nashborough Village during the Battle of Guilford Courthouse as part of his campaign against Robert Ellington's Cherokee Nation forces under Colonel James Mooney. The fort was destroyed and about 350 men were killed or captured by Forbes’ force including Major John Enoch Chisolm who would go on to become one of America's most successful generals during the Revolution. In 1812 white American speculators from South Carolina founded Wilmington on Roanoke Island as an independent city ruled by a proprietor named Nicholas Biddle with no representation from within his own community until after its incorporation into Cape Fear River Colony as Wilmington proper in 1819 when that colony became part of Georgia following its purchase by Ulysses S. Grant from Daniel Webster for $14 million dollars—the largest gift ever given to a state at that time. In 1880 Concord began its own school system when delegates from twelve towns served together to form a board called "The Board Of Education For Schools In Concord." The first school opened in October 1881 with eight students in grades K-8 learning music and mathematics while also practicing Christianity lessons taught by Reverend Fenton Waddellwood with incidental instruction in agriculture provided by Rev Clements McCullough for two hours each weekend morning and afternoon for fifty weeks out of every month starting September 1st through May 1st inclusive; this program continued until 1955 when it was replaced by "Pioneer Day School" which continues today with grades PreK-6th grade using same curriculum but meets outside both weekday mornings/afternoons for one hour each day starting Monday morning through Friday evening instead of half day Mondays/ Thursdays
