Concord, North Carolina is a city in Davidson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 23,848 at the 2000 census. It is the most populous city in Davidson County and the second-most populous city in Western North Carolina after Asheville. Concord's nickname as "The City of Churches" comes from its concentration of religious institutions, including two largest Baptist churches and four largest Methodist churches. The city also has a small number of Catholic and Jehovah's Witnesses congregations. The first Europeans to visit what is now Concord were Frenchmen who founded a trading post there in 1749. In 1810 the Union troops under General Johnston destroyed the French post and took over this location as their new headquarters during the American Revolution. The First Presbyterian church was built on what is now Market Street in 1812; it soon became known as "the mother church." The present day Trinity Episcopal Church was built on Meeting Street between High Street and Elmwood Avenue in 1839. It became part of the Episcopal Diocese of Charlotte after that diocese was created within the newly formed Anglican Church USA in 1912. At that time, nearly all Congregationalists left for affiliation with Charlotte because they felt that bishoprics there were too political for them (a move which helped make Durham more centralized). In 1870, when Wesleyan University moved from Roanoke to Chapel Hill, many people wanted to follow them but found that Raleigh had more pressing needs at that time such as housing developments for faculty and students (Raleigh already had an extensive public transportation system). Accordingly, on May 10th (the day before Wesleyan's relocation), Concord voted to ratify an ordinance establishing Chapel Hill College as one of two private schools within Davidson County – along with Wake Forest University – with both schools becoming fully accredited by state boards some years later. The growth of Raleigh led to increased competition for jobs among businesses throughout Davidson County so much so that by 1920 only one business remained open solely due to job creation rather than influx of workers into town; this occurred despite efforts by government officials to attract industrial companies away from downtown Raleigh while maintaining quality standards within their industry districts (something which would later be labeled "сhaping downtown"). However, although downtown Raleigh experienced significant loss during this time period due largely to redevelopment efforts spearheaded by local officials instead of those emanating from outside interests like those seen surrounding Durham or Chapel Hill – overall crime rates have consistently decreased since then making it one of America’s safest cities when measured against similar metrics such as violent crime rate or property values per capita – Downtown Concord saw continued progress throughout much of this decade attributable not just to economic development but also increasing levels civic engagement among its citizens via various organizations including arts groups/performance art venues/etc., having initiated several ambitious public projects including a new Library / Museum complex on High Street adjacent Toomer’s Grove Park & Country Club which opened in 2001 amidst great fanfare followed shortly thereafter by another large complex on Elmwood Avenue near Interstate 40 which replaced an earlier structure dating back to 1924
