Concord, North Carolina is a town in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. Concord was founded by white men on December 6, 1811 as a small village on the Cumberland River. The first store and post office were established in Concord in 1812. The settlement grew rapidly due to its location near the then-newXanadu Canal and its easy access to trade with South Carolina and Georgia. In 1824, when the canal was completed and became available for navigation through Concord's exclusionary zone, it became an important transportation hub for goods brought into and out of North Carolina from neighboring states. In 1840, Concord incorporated as a town under State law which granted it more autonomy than other towns within Mecklenburg County. The town's first mayor was James Sappington. By 1860, Concord had a population of 3,000 and began construction of what would become known as "the Capitol", the first purpose-built courthouse in North Carolina.. Concord continued to grow during Reconstruction; by 1870 it had reached 9,000 residents and began building new homes around what is now downtown. Although some aspects of Reconstruction deeply influenced Concord (such as racial integration), most residents opted not to participate in this period of dramatic change that swept across America after the American Civil War ended slavery two years earlier
