A branch office was opened at what is now called Pattonville Road near present day Durham City limits in 1830 under Colonel Nathaniel Foard who served as Postmaster until his death in 1835. In 1868 when white men began arriving to this area they encountered African Americans working as slaves and they were not welcomed or accepted with open arms by these new arrivals so three ordinances were passed forbidding slavery within one mile of any white person’s house or property without consent of that person’s owner/manager/agent etc.: “An Act to Abate Evilfullness Amongst Our Colored People”; “An Act To Suppress All Forms Of Slavery Within This Province And Overseas”; and “An Actforcing allewise Our Native American Immigrants Who Have Made themselves Free & Accepted Us As fellow Citizens In all respects unto us libelling them Falsely For doing So” One such resident born into slavery during this time was Drayton McGowan who became president of UNC Chapel Hill during those years In 1886 Reverend GEOFFREY WOODS came to town and purchased land east side High Street between Laurel Avenue and Academy Boulevard from Ebenezer Scudder for $5 per acre He dedicated this land to public education establishment called Wood's School which still stands today serving grades PreK-12th grade . After Rev Woods' death his children converted it into a private high school called Emory & Henry College (now Morehouse School). After several expansions Wood's School finally closed its doors due to lack uh support but reopened as Davidson College (now Duke University) thanks largely to Governor BROWNBACK who stated that "It would be an insult not only to our colored people but also our white students if we did not open this college specifically for Negroes." During World War II local textile mills produced military clothing for America's war effort so much so that Drayton McGowan donated millions worth of fabric to Duke University along with other items making him oneofthe largest donors ever givento a university In 1955 English professor JOHN PATTERSON moved into town from Raleigh upon inheriting his father's estate here following his father's death . Patterson taught at UNC Chapel Hill before becoming provost then chancellor there before joining UNC System Chancellor HARVEY KERRY as leaderofthe UNC systemfollowingKerry's electionin1977 . Upon Harper Kerry's retirement Christa McAuliffe took over as chancellor effective July 1st 1979 until her appointment as UConn women's basketball head coach on January 20th 1984 .
