Over time though, these settlers began to develop new commercial ventures within Concord itself such as tanning hides for export or importing goods from farther away. In 1855, when Raleigh become an independent city under state jurisdiction, Concord became its administrative center under the direction of Mayor James Fenton. This period saw great growth for Concord due to its location on Trade Street which served as both a commercial artery and transportation hub for southeastern North Carolina during this time period. By 1900 however, much progress had been made within the city limits with streetcar lines being built connecting different parts of town making it easier for people to get around without havingto walk long distances or take buses or trains! Concord is a city in and the county seat of Wake County, North Carolina. The population was 117,521 at the 2010 census. The city is also the home of Wake Forest University and its affiliated research institutes and schools. The first permanent settler in what is now Concord was David Fenton, who arrived in 1775. In 1811, John Randolph built a cabin on present day Randolph Avenue just north of downtown Concord. By 1828, Concord had a population of over 100 people and by 1851 it had reached 300 people. However, because Raleigh was growing rapidly at this time and there were no land grants for rural areas east of Raleigh until after the Civil War, most of the growth in Concord occurred outside of town limits. In 1865, when Johnston's army invaded North Carolina to overthrow Confederate General Robert E., Johnston's forces passed through Concord on their way to join him in muster points south of Lake Norman. A large crowd gathered around Captain James Harnett's store on Meeting Street to hear Johnston speak about his plan for invading Durham County from within—a move that would later be known as "The March to Montgomery." When Johnston's force reached Durham (now part of Cary), they discovered that General Beall had already evacuated that community instead and moved his army into southern Durham County undetected by Johnston's troops. This event is considered one of the turning points in the war for North Carolina; it led to more northerners joining the Confederacy than ever before while simultaneously weakening Union forces in central North Carolinaand opening up new opportunities for recruitment among soldiers away from home
