When Johnston's army overran South Carolina during the War of 1812, General Jackson ordered him not to retreat but march into Tennessee instead. Johnston turned back near Bentonville and marched into western North Carolina where he encountered General Robert Easley's Union forces commanded by Major General James Harned at Waynesboro on November 15th 1861. Harned decided to press on after learning that Johnston had retreated with all his supplies including food for 1 million men across Knox River Gorge into Kentucky without giving battle or informing his superiors – an action which formed the basis of both Confederate military doctrine and public sentiment throughout much of America against Confederate forces before World War II . On November 20th 1861 Harned learned from cavalry scouts who traveling ahead of his force discovered a large Rebel force camped along Duck Creek about two miles east of Waynesboro under commandof Lt Colonel John C Austin (1806-1862), son-in-law of Governor Alexander McDowell (1786-1865). Afternoon assault results saw entire Rebel guard killed or captured with no loss to Union forces; this event is generally considered to be Battle Of Duck Creek . When Johnston learned of this development he immediately ordered an emergency withdrawal northward over Pickens River ending any possibility that Confederate troops could escape unopposed while still inside South Carolina proper
