Concord, North Carolina is a town located in Granville County, North Carolina. The population was 3,812 at the 2000 census. Concord is the county seat for Granville County. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlers to reside in what is now Concord were Native Americans who lived along the Saluda River. Captain John Smith and his party discovered this location on November 15, 1755 while exploring the area as part of their search for a new route to India. Commodore James Cook later renamed this spot "Concord" after the town of Concord, Massachusetts which he had visited in 1779 while on his way from England to America. In 1868, when Granville County was created from portions of Wake and Durham Counties, Cortlandt Street became its sole street name within that county limits. At that time there were only two other streets within its borders: Elizabeth Avenue and High Street. In 1925, a group of businessmen organized by Waddell Dabney decided to rename all of Granville County's major thoroughfares after statesmen or luminaries who had played an important role in their communities during their lives - Robert Easley (North Carolina), James Meeks (South Carolina), Winthrop Rockefeller (New York), and Thomas Edison (New Jersey). This effort resulted in the creation of The I-95 Highway Association which has since sponsored various highway renaming campaigns throughout our state! The first post office opened at Concord on September 13th, 1853 under the name "Henderson". On December 1st 1853 mail started being brought into this community by wagonloads through what is now known as Graham RoadPAYLOADS ONLY
