In 1871, when Rutherford County was created from parts of Fayetteville and Orange counties, Concord became its county seat. By 1900, however, Concord's importance as a commercial center had waned somewhat due to growing rural concentrations around Raleigh-Durham or Durhamtowne – both located within easy commuting distance – while also suffers from successive fires that destroyed much of downtown during Reconstruction Period (1868-1912). Nevertheless by 1910 Concord had recovered sufficiently to become home to two newspapers: "The Herald" (founded 1892) and "The News & Observer" (founded 1912). However during World War II both papers were forced out of business by military censorship laws which made printing anything critical or political punishable by imprisonment or execution. After decades of decline Hearst Corporation acquired control over all three papers in 1987; they continue printings today but do so under different names
