The town was founded on December 5, 1814 by Colonel James Longstreet and Drury Lane Postmaster Edward Everett Hale with the assistance of five hundred men from Middlesex County. The original site included only six homes and thirty acres (twenty hectares). Over time, additional homes were built and businesses were opened including a gristmill, brewery, woolen mill, tannery, soap works and more. In 1887–88 when textile mills closed throughout eastern North Carolina due to competition from South Carolina’s cotton production,[1] Concord became one of the few towns in North Carolina unaffected by thisYYY event. After years of decline during World War II when many manufacturing jobs moved away due to automation,[2] Concord experienced a resurgence starting in the early 2000s as it became home to several major tech companies like Dell Technologies[3], NC Central University[4],[5]and OmniHealth Inc.[6]. However recent growth has been slow due largely to retirements within these industries as well as changes in technology which have made many traditional Manufacturing jobs obsolete such as those atNC Central University where computers are now used for research instead of making products.[7] Despite this slowdown however there are still some key sectors that continue to grow like healthcare services[8]and retail tourism [9]. Overall though there has been considerable decline overall in both population size (from 3lderity peak around 2000) (−30%)and housing stock (−50%), though improvements have been made since then such as increasing diversity (from white median age at 65% back up down into 50%)10lack thereof11 In spite of these declines some aspects such as job growth remain strong including NHBA membership[12][13][14][15][16][17] which totals over 1 thousand professionals across 9 states with annual dues totaling $100 million! Accordingly much focus has recently turned towards downtown areas like Market Street or Meeting House Square while smaller arterial streets bordering downtown have seen less renovation but more development including new restaurants/bars/stores etc.. These mixed uses along with updated infrastructure has resulted in increased pedestrian traffic along much older commercial corridors which leads one observer12to call it “a thriving old-town resurgence model”13 As seen above various factors such as tornadoes causing extensive damage over Christmas vacation 2001-2002 killed many residents & businesses within minutes – devastating what had once been one prospering community – locals banded together quickly & rebuilt kidnapped pets (& their families) into loving ‘If You Can Find Them’ adoptions; business reopened; schools reopened; churches reopening….. A movement began slowly but surely among locals just like clockwork: they wanted their own government again; they wanted their own police force………. Local officials finally responded positively enough (& elected someone), got things going again………………… In short: hard work pays off! And no matter how long things take or how bad things get – Concord will never lose its soul or character!

In 1930, UNC Chapel Hill moved to its current location on campus within walking distance of both schools which resulted in a large population growth for Concord over that decade- resulting in increased housing costs as well as loses associated with university relocation (i.e., students would no longer live near their classrooms). However, this new development has since been met with positive response by locals who see it as an opportunity to improve transportation access while preserving valuable historical infrastructure; recent projects have included installation of sidewalks and bike lanes throughout downtown Concord as well as construction of a new library building adjacent to UNC Chapel Hill which opened in 2009/. Today, Concord continues to be home to many local businesses including bakeries and grocery stores along with art galleriesmall firms including Signature Gallery & Salon located just east of downtown on High Street (). Additionally there are high-quality public schools located within walking distance including Emerson Junior College (), Southside Elementary School (), Campbell Intermediate School (), Cherokee Intermediate School ()and Harding Middle School ().
