Concord, North Carolina is a town in Buncombe County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 3,851 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Asheville metropolitan area. Concord was founded in 1818 by General Daniel Boone and his family as a trading post on the south fork of the Holston River. The first store opened in 1824. The town grew rapidly during the 19th century due to its location on a major trade route between Chattanooga, Tennessee and Wilmington, Delaware. In 1868 Concord became an incorporated village when all of Buncombe County was divided into townships. The first mill in Concord was built in 1871 by Jno Hartsfield. The mill produced flour for local markets and also exported flour to New York City and Philadelphia]. By 1902 only three mills remained in Concord; one operated by Ayer Mills (now known as Alcoa), another by American Canning Company (now JBS) and the last two were owned by Pemberton Manufacturing Company (). In 1925 Concord became home to Southwestern Education Laboratory (), which later became Vanderbilt University (). After World War II, it experienced growth as manufacturing left for overseas locations or died out altogether; many small businesses closed or merged with larger ones over time including several garment factories that employed up to 1,000 people (). Many high-rise buildings were erected during this period such as First Baptist Church (), now known as Southern Living magazine headquarters (). Since 2000s there has been significant redevelopment taking place with two large mixed-use projects coming online: One called "Emmalyn" ()–an office tower completed in early 2017–and another called "Chase Park" (), completed late last year across from Southpointe Mall (). These developments have brought much needed new life to downtown which had begun to decline since the Great Recession hit town hard (). Downtown business owners have seen an increase in foot traffic and tourists who are drawn to unique shopping experiences within walking distance of most shops and restaurants
