The history of Concord begins with early settlers who began arriving in1734 when British forces burned down several other small villages within present-day Raleigh County after attacking American Indians along the Scioto River valley. These early settlers were primarily English Protestants who had come overland from England to purchase land grants from colonial officials in what is now southeastern Ohio and central Kentucky.

In fall 1735 two other pioneer families – Richard Henderson’s family from Virginia and Nicholas Sevier’s family from South Carolina – also moved into this area and established themselves along Banks Street soon thereafter. One source says that Henderson may have been inspired to move because he saw scalps piled up high along the banks of the river where his father used to fish; others claim that Henderson may have been attracted to local plainswomen whom he met while prospecting for coal nearby.
