Ammunition history in Concord, North Carolina began with the Kenny Manufacturing Company beginning business in 1868. The company produced ammunition for their rifle and Pistol brands. Ammunition production continued until 1910 when it was closed down by the company due to economic reasons. In 1907, a new factory was built to produce ammunition for the Confederate Army. The new factory was named the Western Armory and it continued production of ammunition until 1914. In 1915, another new factory was built to produce ammunition for World War I. This factory became known as the Winchester Arsenal and it continued production of munitions until 1941. During World War II, Concord began producing munitions for both the United States Navy and the United States Army. The city also produced artillery rounds which were used during World War II. During this time, Concord's arsenal became known as "The National Arsenal." After World War II ended, Concord's arsenal reopened under new management and resumed manufacturing of bullets and artillery rounds again. Concord, North Carolina is a town located in Henderson County, North Carolina. The population was 10,651 at the 2010 census. Concord is the county seat of Henderson County. Concord is home to two universities: Davidson College and UNC-Chapel Hill. It also has a large number of businesses and farms. The first European settlers to Concord were Scotsmen who arrived in 1675. They named the town after their own home country, Scotland. By 1750, there were 400 people living in Concord. The town's first school was built in 1778 by Reverend John Auldridge. In 1801, the United States Congress granted land to Concord for a public square and courthouse complex called Trinity Square Park (now known as Eastern Market). In 1911, Henderson County was formed from parts of Johnston County and became one of the six counties that made up the newly created states of South Carolina during the American Civil War. On September 14, 1861, Confederate General Jubal Early invaded Johnston County and began what would become known as "the Battle of Greenville." After days of combat and hard fighting, Early's forces withdrew towards Corinth without achieving any significant goals or gains overall. For this act of bravery and sacrifice on behalf of his state (and Confederate forces), General Early was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor by President Ulysses S Grant on May 3, 1916
