Clemmons is a small town in the Pender County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,867 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh–Durham metropolitan area. Clemmons is located on U.S. Route 316 and State Highway 258 east of Raleigh. The first permanent settler in Clemmons was George Wilkinson in 1824. By 1840, there were 10 settlers living in Clemmons. In 1854, the first school was built in Clemmons by Wm Halsey and Sarah Jackson from Cherokee Nation. The school operated for one year before being closed due to financial difficulties. In 1870, white men began to arrive in what would become Clemmons from surrounding counties including Henderson County and Surry County looking for land to settle on or work on plantations near Raleigh. By 1880, there were 97 settlers living in Clemmon with the majority being farmers who grew corn, beans, potatoes and other vegetables for local markets and sold their produce door-to-door or delivered it along US Routes 316 and 258 to local residents Grocery stores like J G White & Sons store which opened its doors on November 15th 1830 just south of present day Clemmon intersection of USRoute 316/258 Rev Rufus Hawkins established Presbyterian Church (now First Baptist) back then but that building got burned down sometime later during Union Occupation 1865 After helping his friends build a new church they named it "First Presbyterian" after that building until 1903 when General William Tecumseh Sherman's troops burned it down as part of their offensive against the South during Reconstruction which ended up weakening white southerners control over parts of the Deep South following that event . From 1903 until 1945 First Baptist congregation continued operate out Building #2 next door still doing so today In 1946 First Baptist congregation moved into current location across from Post Office after purchasing lot next door from Mrs Fenton . post office moved into former First Baptist building circa 1950s
