The town was founded in 1878 by James Hance, an American soldier who had been captured during the Mexican-American War. On November 1, 1868, Cherokees voted to secede from North Carolina and form their own country called South Carolina within Cherokee County. The town began to grow rapidly after this sale and by 1830 had a population of over 2,000 people living within its limits. In 1865, when Confederate General Robert Ewell's army invaded North Carolina from Virginia following their unsuccessful attempt to take Richmond (the capital city of Virginia), Clemmons became one of eight communities throughout the state that sided with Union forces against the Confederacy. At this time, however, most residents were still loyal to their southern stately kingpin compatriot Jefferson Davis and nothing more than bystanders during what is commonly referred to as "The War for Northern Rights." Aftermath included much destruction including arson attacks against Union buildings throughout eastern North Carolina as well as raids on homes by Confederate troops looking for arms and munitions caches; these campaigns ultimately failed but did result in many casualties among both sides’ civilian populations. It wasn't until 1971 thatClemmon's once bustling downtown area experienced any significant rebuilding efforts following years of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) diagnoses among local veterans who fought during or shortly after World War II; since then many businesses have reopened while others have been closedtered or relocated altogether due to lackOf interest or available funding from local officials/community members alike (among them are several J C Penney stores that once thrived within downtown). Today remnants of downtown can be seen around 3rd Street running east-west between High Street and Meeting House Road while north side streets such as Third Avenue run perpendicular thereto giving an illusion that Downtown actually shrunk rather than grewduring those early days following WWII; despite this impression some establishments do indeed remain openalbeit not having much business currently because PTSD rates continueto affect veteran populations disproportionately even 50+ year later
