Clemmons is a town in Wilson County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 3,469 at the 2010 census. Clemmons is part of the Greensboro-Winston-Salem Metropolitan Statistical Area. In 1881, the village of Clemmons was organized and named for J.C. Clemmons, an early settler in what is now Wilson County. Clemmons was founded by John Clements in 1881 on land he bought from George Washington Lewis and others adjacent to the Catawba River. In 1889, it became a post office with the name "Clemmons". In 1901 it changed its name to "Clemmons", after J.C.'s grandson David Clements (1902–2001), who had been elected sheriff of Wilson County in 1990 and 1993 and also served as mayor of Winston-Salem from 1984 to 1990 and 1994 to 2000; both men were Republicans. In 1906, voters approved a referendum asking if they would become one of two counties in North Carolina that would be formed as a result of the state's eastern secession from Virginia; when the vote resulted in no clear majority, Governor James Buchanan called for a special election so that all residents could cast ballots on whether they wished to become part of Durham or Raleigh Counties instead (the county lines had been changing rapidly since 1905). As Durham County voted against joining Raleigh Counties, Clemmon became one of four towns located within Wake County – along with Apex (northwest Raleigh), Cary (central Raleigh), and Salisbury (southwest Raleigh) – that did not join Wake County because they felt their taxes were too high there compared to those elsewhere in Durham or Raleigh Counties. The Clearmont School Board met for the first time on November 6th 1902 to discuss plans for school construction which included houses for teachers on lot #1 & lot #2 near present day intersection of Main Street & Lumber Road/Highway 27B
