Clemmons is located on the eastern edge of Halifax County and is bordered by Moore County to the north, Durham County to the east, Wilson County to the south and Brunswick County to the west. The town was founded in 1837 by John Dickson Clemmons and his family as a plantation on Catawba River. In 1860, Timberline Railroad built tracks through Clemmons, making it an important town for transportation during that time period. In 1892-1893, Confederate veteran General James Longstreet visited Clemmons while touring western North Carolina after returning from Virginia's campaign against Ulysses S Grant. Longstreet stopped at Clemmon's house for dinner before continuing his tour across Union territory. In 1913-1914, a tornado destroyed many homes inclemions including one belonging to CleMMONS Mayor Wimp Fletcher who survived with only minor injuries Since its founding, Clemmons has been home to many businesses including two banks (First National Bank and Coastal State Bank), three churches (New Hope Baptist Church and First Presbyterian Church of Christ; Methodist Episcopal Church; United Methodist Church), two schools (Thompson Consolidated School District #1 & 2), four stores (including one that became known as "The Open Market", which closed in 1985) and several residences. A number ofCleMMONS businesses continue today such as "The Pit" barbecue restaurant which opened in 1984 adjacent to First Presbyterian Church; "Pine Gap" gas station which operated from 1975 until 2003 near Thompson Consolidated School District #1 & 2;"Cottonfields" restaurant which operated from 1978 until 2002 adjacent to New Hope Baptist Church; "Green Gables", also known as "Maggie's Place", now operates as an inn adjacent thereto In addition to its economy,CleMMONS has experienced other noteworthy aspects over time such as being home to both firsts - a post office and a library - within less than forty years of each other It has also been called an important center for education with several colleges/universities located within walking distance ofCleMMONS including UNC Greensboro University-Greensboro Campus; UNC Wilmington University-Wilmington Campus; Duke University-Duke Chapel School Of Medicine And Dentistry; Clemson University- Clemson Health Sciences Center Today, Clemmons remains a vibrant community with active businesses and residents working together towards common goals
