Clemmons, North Carolina is a small town located in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. The population was 2,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Charlotte–Mecklenburg Metropolitan Statistical Area. The site where Clemmons stands was first inhabited by the Cherokee tribe and then by the Catawba tribe. In 1819, General James Longstreet's army discovered and destroyed a large Indian encampment near what is now Clemmons. This event led to a rename of the area from Creek Town to Fort Hill in honor of General Longstreet's victory over the Indians. The community began as a small farming village with only 10 households in 1871. By 1893, it had added an addition of 3 stores and 8 churches. A post office was established at Clemmon in 1912, and remained in operation until 1965 when it was closed due to lack of mail traffic. In 1948,Clemmons became an incorporated town under Mecklenburg County law when all that remained were its two rural villages: Creek Town and Fort Hill. The first town meeting occurred on November 16th that year with 40 residents present including 15 voting for incorporation while 25 voted against incorporation because they desired their own independent government still based within their respective villages. The second town meeting took place on December 5th which resulted in passage of the ordinance by a vote of 12-0 with one abstention; however, no action was taken subsequent to this meeting leading to effective incorporation on January 6th 1952 according to Mecklenburg County Law #2-27 “An Act To Incorporate Certain Towns Under Mecklenburg County Law” At independence from Mecklenburg County on January 6th 1952 as per local law #2-27 “An Act To Incorporate Certain Towns Under Mecklenburg County Law” Clemmons had 2 towns (Creek Town & Fort Hill) instead of just 1 as initially planned Following annexation into Charlotte/Mecklenburg MSA on July 14th 2018 all 2 towns lost their separate histories along with all their citizens & buildings leaving behind just some memories

He is considered one of the most influential figures in North Carolina history.
Clemmons was founded in 1795 by James Clemmons. The town officially became a county seat in 1868. In 1865, the Wilmington and Raleigh Railroad laid track through Clemmons and it now forms part of the NC Central Railway system.
