It lies on the Piedmont Plains of the Appalachian Mountains and is bordered by Asheville to the north, Greenville to the east, Monroe to the south, and Wilson to the west. Clemmons was founded in 1868 as a post office called Church Hill. The name derived from an early settler, Colleton Clemmons, who named his farm Clemmon's Corner. The first schools in Clemmons were private homes run by Methodists until 1887 when a school building was erected on what is now Main Street. In 1907-08, local farmers built a two-story log courthouse on (and around) what is now Court Square. The original courthouse burned down in 1913 but much of its timbered facade still remains today as part of Clemmons' downtown core. In 1917, General Electric installed its corporate headquarters here while other major companies located in Asheville or Greensboro moved out during World War I because of economic restrictions placed upon them by government authorities. Afterward, industry gradually dwindled and most businesses closed or converted to retail unless they were swallowed up by larger rivals such as Sears Roebuck and JCPenney which had opened their own stores along Interstate 95 between 1915 and 1925; these store openings begankicking off what has been known locally as "The Great mall era" of Clemmons'. Clemmons was founded in 1834 by James Clemmons and his wife Lucy. The town was named after Colonel John Clemmons, who had donated land to the town. The first post office in Clemmons was established in 1835. In 1886, the town became a incorporated municipality with a population of around 100 people. In 1936, the name of the town was changed to Gastonia when Gaston County was created from part of Rutherford County.
