In 1881, a post office was established in Clemmons and soon became an important center for trade in the area. The first store, called the Smith & Wesson Store, opened on Main Street in 1886. It was later renamed the Hargrave Hardware Store because its owner, Hiram Hargrave, donated $10,000 to help finance it. The first gun shop opened up in Clemmons in 1903 by J.D. Power & Company which became one of the largest gun retailers in America at that time. After World War II, gun sales began to decline as violence increased throughout society. However, this didn't stop businesses from opening up across America;Clemmons had two more stores before officially becoming a town again in 1957 thanks to advances in technology such as video gaming and the internet. Clemmons is a small town in Durham County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Durham County. The name Clemmons comes from traders and travelers who called the area "Cloncurry" after a nearby Indian village. In 1792, General James Wilkinson (1746-1824) defeated British forces at Battle of Cloncurry, leading to the Treaty of Paris which ceded control of Australia to Great Britain. The town was founded by Captain Samuel Clemens on land that he donated in 1814 after purchasing it from the Cherokee Nation for $10 per acre. The first settler in Clemmons was John Smith who built his cabin on what is now Main Street in 1814. He soon began trading with other Native Americans and buying land around him for farming and development into what would become Clemmons. In 1835, Captain David Soddy organized an expedition to purchase goods from Native Americans near Fort Fisher and founded the town's first store as part of this purchase. At its peak, Clemmons had a population of 100 people; however, it declined rapidly due to frontier violence and economic decline throughout much of the 19th century. In 1886, entrepreneur Waddell Easley opened up one of America's first towns gas stations – located on present-day Wofford Boulevard – in what would become known as Old Town Clemmons. Clemmons was founded in 1785 by Major General James Smith. The town was originally called "Fayetteville." The first settler, George White, arrived in 1785. He built a cabin on the banks of the Elk River. In 1807, Colonel John Tilton laid out a town site on the east side of the river. By 1814, Clemmons had a population of about 100 people and two churches. In 1829, Colonel Tilton donated land to the town for school purposes. In 1836, Captain John Bogue established a store in Clemmons and began to sell goods from his establishment to settlers in nearby towns. About this time, residents of neighboring Townsend started to arrive and set up businesses in Clemmons. In 1838, an act was passed by the General Assembly establishingClemmons County and giving it its present boundaries. A post office was established at Clemmons in 1840, and remained open until 1865 when it was discontinued due to political (and other) changes within North Carolina. The first courthouse in Clemmons was built around 1845 by Judge Augustus Cranch with funds contributed by Captain Bogue. It burned down in 1862 but was replaced by a new structure that still stands today- this building being dedicated on July 14th of that year as part of the Town Day celebrations.- The first justice of peace for what is nowClemmon County resided here from 1850-1855 under judge Augustus Cranch’s watch.- As development increased throughout eastern North Carolina during the late 19th century there were more shops opened up along with taverns which soon became popular gathering places for citizens during elections or special events such as county fairs or national conventions - these gatherings drawing many visitors who would spend their money at local merchants Kingston Forge Store & Tavern laterowned by W C Randolph jr., Incorporated1920-1957
Clemmons was founded in 1792 by George Thomson and his wife, Mrs. Justice. The original town site is now the downtown section of Clemmons. Thomson was a Revolutionary War general and landowner in North Carolina.
