The first settler in Clemmons was James DeLoach who arrived in 1799 and built a cabin on the banks of the Fuquay River. In 1817, John Witherspoon moved to Clemmons from near Salisbury and founded a gristmill there. The first post office in Clemmons opened in 1821. The Town of Clemmons was established on March 3, 1826 by Act of Parliament under the name "Newbern". On January 22nd, 1870, it changed its name to "Clemmons" after General Robert E. Lee's surrender at Appomattox Court House in Virginia that ended the Civil War. The original courthouse burned down in 1865 but was rebuilt and used as the municipal building until 1886 when it burned again and was replaced by the present structure which stands today. In 1903, General Motors announced plans for a large manufacturing plant known as Stroudsburg Plant #1 outside Roxboro which would have involved displacing many local jobs with automation technology; however these plans were never realized due to economic reasons including World War I shortages of parts needed for such an investment and later US government restrictions on military production during peacetime years. A new shopping mall called Gateway Mall opened adjacent to Interstate 85/85A east of town on October 1st 1998; this development led to increased business activity within town limits as well as outlying areas around it creating more employment opportunities within town limits than had been available before Gateway Mall opening which has helped keep residents engaged with their community while also providing adequate retail space for shoppers outside townlimits without having to leave their homes or businesses behind.
