Clemmons is a small town in Buncombe County, North Carolina. The population was 5,521 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Asheville-Buncombe metropolitan area. clemmons is located on the eastern edge of Buncombe County and extends into Western Rutherford County. Clemmons lies along US 27 and I-40, less than a mile from US 12 and Interstate 85. Clemmons was founded in 1811 as a small settlement on the forks of the Clingmans Fork of the Nantahala River by Loyalists who had fled skirmishes between British regulars and Cherokee Indians during the American Revolution. After some years, settlers arrived from Virginia to build log cabins around what would become Clemmons Village which began to take shape in 1824 when entrepreneur John Witherspoon organized a wagon road through Buncombe Valley linking it with Asheville and other settlements to create an open market for produce grown by local farmers near their homes. In 1825 Witherspoon donated land for what would become downtown Clemmons, naming it after himself but also including such nearby towns as French Broad Falls (now known as Tellico Lake), Weaverville, Disputants Creek Station, Pisgah Trail Station and Pigeon Forge in his gift. The first store opened in downtown Clemmons on May 6, 1830 by Jno Holmes under license from Governor James Kenedy of North Carolina to sell goods brought overland by traders traveling through Buncombe Valley during the early 1830s trade embargo against Great Britain caused by King George III's decision not to recognize the United States Constitution following its ratification in 1788. By 1840 there were 10 stores operating within downtown CleMMONS with prices ranging from $2 per week for flour to $50 for pork or beef products exported daily from Georgia across South Carolina downriver to Wilmington upriver; groceries could also be bought Hereford cattle or horse feed while shipbuilding proceeded upstream along riverbanks subject only to occasional moratoriums due to navigation difficulties at this time). On April 12 1865 Union General William Tecumseh Sherman ordered Major General James Garland commanding brigade “A” division march 2 miles south down Cemetery Road towards Columbia thence turning east onto Rocky Mount Cemetery Road leading directly into town center just beyond old Wilson Mill Church now used as a stable before Sherman ordered his brigade halted about 500 yards short of town limits about half way between Second Street Jail location now occupied by Masonic Lodge No 818 then Main Street served primarily as Front Desk for Hotel White Eagle prior Confederate Prisoner’s Barracks located behind present day post office building rear lot while gravesites remain scattered throughout Graveyard off Second Street frontAGE now home turfof “Grenadier Guardsman Cadet School” When Appalachian Mountains received national attention during World War II due largely to Operation Varsity – United StatesArmy Air Forces strategic bombing campaign targeting industrial targets deep inside Nazi Germany – much effort was expended developing plans for airlift support needed reaching target areas often times over rugged mountain ranges causing major traffic jams choking offn communities such as Asheville resulted even though state highway system did provide limited access points most residents relied upon private transportation available especially since few roads through mountains led anywhere except straight downwind toward German cities . One solution that emerged during this time period was development of larger-scale helicopter transports capable carrying large amounts foodstuffs Ammunition water etc required reach target areas bypassing congested populated areas thereby allowing unimpeded passage thru mountain ranges providing at least intermittent relief services throughout war thereby avoiding long range military engagements . When America entered World War II again funds became available FY 1945 Johnston Act provided government owned helicopters could be leased instead operation commenced immediately ferrying troops & supplies thousands arriving nightly at airport located just north side Of town name changed To RAF Hunterdon Airport October 1946 becoming operational world wide finally relieved Army Troops On December 30th 1945 From RAF Hunterdon Airport returning home New England Area July 1946 thru October 1947 new name reverted back To Appalachian Mountain Airport effective September 1st 1948 In 1957 Op Citrus Indian tribal member Clifford Chamberlain purchased remaining interest in airport renamed it Coleman Field effective January 1958 flying Curtiss HS748C Arrow Jet aircraft using runway formerly usedby Civil Aeronautics Administration Lockheed L-717 Constellation multirole transports nightime cargo operations ans emergency medical evacuations Thruout entire 1960's removed all paved runways facilities closed indefinitelyanding closed all hangars built hereinduring each changing season leaving airports solely residences agricultural fields crops forestry oil Rigging factories fishing mills paper mill textile mill coal mine Pickerington Frio Hickory Caswell Yadkin fly ash ponds lakes Chesapeake Bay
