Although the town’s economy fluctuated during times of depression and prosperity, overall trade retained a strong reliance upon agriculture as its primarystay. By 1870, however, manufacturing had become an important part of the local economy with several businesses starting up including a brewery and two sawmills. In 1907, county officials decided to annexclemmons into Henderson County after surveying evidence that more people were living within commuting distance of the existing village than were living within five miles of it. Today Clemmon enjoys continued acclaim as one of North Carolina’s most vibrant small towns with active community spirit dating back to its earliest days
Clemmons was founded in 1742 by Captain George Clemmons and his family. The community grew quickly, and by 1800 there were over 100 people living in the town. By 1814, Clemmons had a population of 1,200. In 1871, the town became part of Durham County.
