Clemmons, North Carolina is a town located in Union County, North Carolina. The population was 3,581 at the 2010 census. Clemmons was founded in 1825 by Scots-Irish settlers. It became a county seat in 1868 and a city in 1907. The name of the town comes from the Greek word "klemmos," meaning "a small stream." The first settler in Clemmons came from County Clare, Ireland around 1800. In 1825 John McClanahan arrived with his family and started farming land east of present-day Clemmons on Catawba River. McClanahan named his farm Clearwater Creek because it was clear water when he first saw it. By 1830, other Irish immigrants had also come toClemmons and started farms and businesses such as butcher shops, hotels and grocery stores. In 1868 Union County was created from parts of four other counties when North Carolina became a state following the US Civil War. As part of this process, Clemmons became the county seat for Union County although its boundaries still differed slightly from those of present day Union County. The city council made an effort to become one municipality with all residents living within its borders but this failed due to resistance from some businesses who did not want their employees integrated into another municipality which would have included them in taxation or public services provided by that municipality In 1907 Clemmon annexed what is now Dorchester Township which makes up much of eastern Union County today while also annexing much acreage formerly belonging to Catawba Valley Township including most of what is now known as Greenville’s western fringe Today, Clemmon has seen growth both commercially and culturally with restaurants like Olive Garden opening up shop here while more traditional local businesses like Ponderosa Pizza are starting up again as well as several colleges nearby including UNC Chapel Hill and Clemson University . All told there are over 60 businesses located in downtownClemmon employing over 1,000 people who generate nearly $100 million worth of economic activity each year
Clemmons was founded in 1790 by James Clemmons and his wife, Rebecca. The Clemmons family successive farms successively produced tobacco, corn, hay and potatoes until the late 1800s when a new cotton gin was built. TheClemmons descendants continue to farm their land and produce crops today.
