Clemmons is a town in Swain County, North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,471 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Raleigh-Durham Metropolitan Statistical Area. Clemmons was founded in 1792 by Daniel Boone and his family as a small cabin on the Pee Dee River. In 1835, Clemmons became an incorporated village when it combined with neighboring Hampstead to form what is now Swain County. In 1871, Clemmons became one of the original towns in Wake County when that county was divided into two parts. In 1903, Clemmons began serving as the seat of government for both Wake and Swain Counties. On July 12, 1907, Clemmons becomes one of 105 municipalities within North Carolina organized under the proposednational Municipal League Act (Pact #2). By 1912 it had become clear that a more centralized government would be necessary to support growing industry and commerce in Swain County; so on November 16th of that same year Clemmon’s incorporation as an “unincorporated community” were revoked and it reverted back to its former status as a town platted under state law.. The first post office opened in 1905 and closed in 1911. The present post office was opened on August 14th, 1959 by Dr. Clarence Aiken during the time he served as mayor ofclemmonton

Clemmons was founded in 1771 by David Clemmons. The town became a county seat in 1876. In 1903, the North Carolina Railroad came to Clemmons and built a depot on Main Street.
