Clemmons is a town in the U.S. state of North Carolina, located on the Yadkin River. The population was 1,530 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greenville-WWII Veterans Memorial Area. The town was laid out by General David Clemmons and named for him, as he had donated land to be developed. The first store in Clemmons opened in 1857, and early settlers were farmers who raised corn, beans, cattle, hogs and horses. A post office was established in 1859, and a public school began operation in 1865. In 1902 Clemmons became one of sixteen towns incorporated within the new Johnston County seat of Winston-Salem; it remained an unincorporated community until 1907 when it became part of the larger city of Greensboro under then-governor Walter Fenton Smith. In 1916 Clemmons became part of the newly created Charlotte metropolitan area; it remains an unincorporated community today but has been renamed North Carolina's most populous municipality since its incorporation into Charlotte metropolitan area on July 1st that year with a population of over 2 million people according to the 2016 Census results released bythe United States Census Bureau

Clemmons is a town in northwestern North Carolina, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Greenville–Spartanburg–Anderson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name Clemmons is derived from the Cherokee word "xalumi" meaning "a place where corn is grown." The first white people to live in Clemmons were James and Susannah Horry, who arrived in 1784. They named their land Clear Springs after seeing a clear spring near their home. In 1837, Isaac McCoy settled in Clemmons and helped found what would become known as McCoy’s Mills. In 1868, General Custer and his cavalry invaded Indian Territory and burned much of what would later be called Clemmons County. Many residents of Clemmons fled for fear of being captured or killed by the Indians. A few weeks later, however, General George Armstrong Smith ordered all Indian hostilities to stop because he needed supplies for his army. A post office was established at Clear Springs on November 12, 1870, by Jno.[1] The first postmaster was Wm[2] Silliman who served until January 2nd 1888 when he resigned because of financial difficulties caused by the Panic of 1893-1894. On May 15th 1898 Drusilla Kingsbury became Postmistress with Thomas Sprague serving as Assistant Postmaster until 1901 When Mrs Kingsbury took over she operated it under her personal supervision until 1905 when she left to marry Underwood Lumber Co.'s President John Fenton Hyatt Jr.. In 1906 Messrs Sprague & Hyatt bought out Mrs Kingsbury's interest & discontinued operations due to heavy competition from Eastern lumber companies At this time most mail was delivered through Asheville but some still went thruclemons In 1907 when Mr Sprague died an his wife succeeded him As Postmistress She continued operating it unofficially until 1935 When Mrs Beasley took over (& continues operation today) PMT has been organized into 6 divisions (Smaller towns have had one division only) with 3 Divisions each smallest town has 2 divisions now Clemmon Presbyterian Church was built on Main Street in 1865 and enlarged several times including building a new sanctuary on Court Avenue circa 1903-1910 which seats 400+. Also located here are stores (Mr Sprague's store #5), library (Mrs Beasley's library), Baptist church (built 1911), cotton gin/spinning mill ( erected 1909), blacksmith shop (1915), gristmill & flour mill (~1920s) & more since then
Clemmons was founded in 1795 by Colonel James Clemmons, a Revolutionary War veteran and surveyor. The town is located in the Pisgah Mountains, about 20 miles (32 km) east of Raleigh. The population was 1,500 in 1800 and 5,000 in 1830. In 1815, Clemmons became the seat of government for Johnston County; it was moved to Hendersonville in 1836. In 1865, Johnston County seceded from North Carolina and formed Transylvania County; Clemmons remained the county seat until its removal to Hendersonville in 1889.
