When Randolph County disbanded after World War II, all but 1/3 of its residents moved away or were deserted by their longtime friends and constituents; only 4 people left behind whenclearmont consolidated with Fayetteville following annexation by Fayetteville in 1947 (the last remaining residents had already left before incorporation into Fayetteville). A large percentage of these final departures were among farmers who sold their land along I-95 and other routes out west for development elsewhere; much like today's population shift towards Raleigh–Durham metropolitan areas across North Carolina during the late 20th century. However, there are a few scattered reminders that early settlers still call home: A small cemetery located east of downtown which may date back to 1881; a blacksmith shop operated by former slaveowners on Court Street since at least 1917; a local mill which produced flour until 1970; several churches including First Baptist Church (founded in 1792), Methodist Episcopal Church (founded 1871), Presbyterian Church (1834), African Methodist Episcopal Zion church (1893) and Adventist Bible Chapel(established 1911).

In 1814, the town was moved from its original location on the banks of the Yadkin River to what is now its current location on land that had been donated by John Randolph. The town's first store opened in 1815. The community grew rapidly during the 19th century, thanks to heavy investment fromolute investors such as James Gadsden and John Taylor Johnston. By 1830, Clemmons had a population of 1,500 people and it became an important center for cotton production. In 1834,Clemmons became one of the towns in North Carolina that seceded from the state due to opposition to slavery. In 1861,Clemmons participated in Confederate General Robert E Lee's attempt to capture Yorktown Peninsula. After Union forces drove Confederate forces out of Yorktown Peninsula, Clemmons rejoined South Carolina. However, following Reconstruction efforts in South Carolina led by Governor Edwin Mancini (D), Clemmons returned to North Carolina in 1871. By 1880, Clemmon had a population of 5,000 people and it became an important manufacturing center for textiles and other goods
