The first permanent settler in Clayton was James Gardner in 1819. By 1830, Clayton had a population of 300 people and three stores. In 1831, A.P. McClennan donated land to Clayton for a church and school. The town's first mill was built on the current site of downtown in 1834; it later became known as the "Millenia Mill". In 1865, Clayton incorporated as a city with a population of 1,500 residents. That same year saw the opening of its first post office and first courthouse by Drury Lumber Company president John Crain Sr.. In 1907-08 local farmers produced their only crop - peas - which were sold at auction to two Wilmington buyers for $2 per bushel because there was no market for them hereabouts (the beans would be grown elsewhere). After World War I began when America entered into World War I without any declaration of war until after November 4th due to neutrality rules that applied then (Clayton would not become involved in hostilities), production increased rapidly due to an increase in demand from military personnel barracks near Fort Bragg and other bases around the country being build at various points during that time period especially south central NC where cotton farming continued even though most places now haveNAFOs or National Agricultural Forests). This led to what we now call "Clayton's Golden Age" as over 100 businesses thrived including many banks with branches throughout town several insurance companies along with large manufacturers such as Hanes Knitting Mills Incorporated., Coca Cola Refreshment Plant #1 & 2 opened up followed by many more small businesses making this one of largest Uptowns outside Atlanta or Dallas during that time period which continues today although some smaller businesses have since closed down leaving just 5 major national retailers still open today - Macy's Companies Incorporated., Walmart Supercenters & Neighborhood Centers Incorporated., JCPenney Coorporation ('The department store'), Sears Holdings Corporation ('The home shopping mall'). On December 10th 1969 Clifford Berryman shot and killed Mayor Waddell Davis who had been seeking to stop him from building an amusement park acrossfrom City Hall Plaza after Berryman claimed he could provide jobs for everyone if it were built; Davis was shot dead while running away from police officer Floyd Chapman who arrested him moments later after beating Davis with his bare hands just outside City Hall Plaza! The second man to come arrived heathendown road about 1785 and named his land "Clayton" for General Nathaniel Clayton.
Clayton was founded in 1775 by Captain John Clayton, who named it for himself. The town grew rapidly during the Revolutionary War, and by 1781 it had a population of over 1,000 people. In 1825, the town was renamed for General James K. Polk after his win in the presidential election that year.
